Kennesaw is its own city in north Cobb County, about 26 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, and the Cobb County School District serves it. A Saturday here can start on the more than 22 miles of trails at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and end downtown at the Southern Museum, standing next to The General, the locomotive stolen from this very spot, then called Big Shanty, on April 12, 1862.
The raiders picked their moment well: the crew and passengers had stepped off to eat breakfast at the Lacy Hotel, in plain view of the soldiers at Camp McDonald. Conductor William A. Fuller chased The General first on foot, and the town has been telling the story ever since. Big Shanty petitioned the Georgia Legislature for incorporation on September 21, 1887, and became the City of Kennesaw, with city limits drawn one half mile north, south, east and west of the railroad depot. The historic depot still stands downtown, and the railroad still runs right past it.
Kennesaw has everything from downtown townhomes to large amenity communities, and a Kennesaw address doesn't always mean city limits. Here's how the main areas break down.
Legacy Park. This master-planned community includes a dozen single-family neighborhoods, such as Kentmere, Lullwater, Madison and Palisades. Residents share four pools, 11 tennis courts, a 117-acre town park, a 7-acre town green, a lake, lighted trails, an amphitheater and a full-time activities director.
Downtown Kennesaw. Older homes on established streets sit near new-construction townhomes within walking distance of Main Street restaurants and Depot Park. Townes at South Main, a 44-home townhome community, is one example.
Club communities. Neighborhoods near Pinetree Country Club (off McCollum Parkway) and Marietta Country Club (on the West Cobb side) put golf, tennis and a clubhouse close to home. Club membership is separate from buying a home.
West Cobb side (30152). Along Due West and Stilesboro Roads, toward Kennesaw Mountain and Lost Mountain, established swim/tennis subdivisions mix with homes on more generous, wooded lots.
Near KSU and Town Center. Around Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway, condos, townhomes and established subdivisions sit close to shopping, dining and I-75.
A note on addresses: a Kennesaw mailing address (30144 or 30152) doesn't always mean a home is inside city limits. Many homes are in unincorporated Cobb County, which changes who provides services and which taxes apply, so check the exact address.

The Cobb County School District serves Kennesaw. High schools with Kennesaw addresses include North Cobb High School (2025 CCRPI score 81.7), Harrison High School (95.3) and Kennesaw Mountain High School (89.3). Kennesaw Mountain is home to the district's Academy of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, a magnet program with admission by application.
Middle schools in Kennesaw include Awtrey (69.7), Palmer (65.8), Pine Mountain (75.0), Lost Mountain (90.1) and McClure (89.5). Elementary schools include Kennesaw Elementary (63.7), Big Shanty Elementary (76.5), Chalker (66.8), Hayes (72.5), Bullard (84.6) and Lewis (81.5).
The numbers are each school's 2025 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) score on a 0 to 100 scale, for the 2024-25 school year. For comparison, the Cobb County School District scored 79.9 and Georgia 78.0. A score describes a school, not a neighborhood, and attendance zones don't follow city limits, ZIP codes or even subdivision lines. Confirm the assigned schools for the exact address with the Cobb County School District before making an offer.
Kennesaw State University is Georgia's third-largest university, with a record 51,375 students in fall 2025 across its Kennesaw and Marietta campuses, and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation, according to KSU. It's also an R2 research institution. For neighbors, that means college athletics, performances, lectures and a busy corridor of restaurants and shops along Chastain Road, plus game-day traffic worth planning around.
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park covers 2,965 acres between Kennesaw and Marietta and preserves ground where Union and Confederate armies fought from June 19 to July 2, 1864. Today it's where locals go to get outside, with more than 22 miles of maintained trails (leashed dogs welcome) and a visitor center museum.
The summit sits 1,808 feet above sea level, and the mountain rises about 708 feet from its base to get there. Your calves will confirm the second number.
Downtown Kennesaw centers on Depot Park and the United Bankshares Amphitheater, where the city hosts concerts and community events. Across the street, the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is home to The General, the locomotive at the heart of the 1862 Great Locomotive Chase.
Each year, the Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival fills Main Street and Depot Park with barbecue, live music and a kids' zone. About a mile from City Hall, Smith-Gilbert Gardens is the city's 17-acre botanical garden, with woodland paths, koi ponds and 31 sculptures.
Beyond the battlefield, the city runs its own parks:
Swift-Cantrell Park, at 42 acres the city's largest park, has a one-mile perimeter trail, a splash pad, an inclusive playground, a lighted skatepark and the 1.4-acre Frank Boone Dog Park.
Adams Park (33 acres) is home to the Ben Robertson Community Center.
Greenway trails north of downtown connect neighborhoods for walking, running and biking.
From downtown Kennesaw, Marietta Square is about 15 minutes outside rush hour, downtown Atlanta about 35 minutes and Hartsfield-Jackson airport about 50 minutes. I-75 runs through Kennesaw, and reversible Northwest Corridor Express Lanes (Peach Pass required) run along I-75 and I-575. Drive times swing a lot with traffic, so time the real route at the hour you'd actually drive it.
